Relay event successful despite weather
The threat of storms may have moved Relay For Life indoors, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the survivors and the team members.
Saturday’s event was held in the YMCA gym rather than at Tom Byrne Park. A Relay parade that had been planned for Saturday morning was cancelled, and teams quickly dismantled their floats Friday to make campsites in the gym.
It was an amazing transformation and no one seemed to mind the shorter walking track and the somewhat cramped quarters.
The day started with the Survivors Brunch at First United Methodist Church, with Honorary Chairman Judy Branum speaking. [For more on the Survivors Brunch, see the May issue of atmore magazine.]
Opening ceremonies at the gym were held at 1 p.m., with Relay Chairman Julie Ray, Mayor Howard Shell, PCI Tribal Chairman Buford Rolin, and the Rev. Diane Everette taking part.

Mark you calendar.
Relay For Life of Atmore is planned for Saturday, April 24. The day’s event will start with the Survivor Brunch at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church.
“The brunch is a relaxed time of fellowship with other survivors, and all are welcome to attend,” Relay committee member Cindy Lee said.

The parade will feature a survivors float with room for 30 survivors.
“The survivors will have beads to throw,” Lee said. “If someone wants to ride the float, please call me at Atmore Nursing Care [368-9121] so we know how many to expect. The Poarch Band of Creek Indians will also have their small bus if more than 30 wish to ride in the parade.”

City declares Paint the Town Purple Days
If you notice a plethora of purple around Atmore, it’s because we’re in the days leading up to the annual American Cancer Society event on April 24.
Mayor Howard Shell presented a proclamation at Monday’s City Council meeting declaring April 1, 2010 through April 24, 2010 as Paint Atmore Purple Days. The color purple is the signature color of the ACS Relay events signifying the passion that cancer survivors and their families and loved ones feel for the eradication of this disease. Accepting the proclamation were Julie Ray, chairman of the Atmore event, and her son, Matthew Ray.
The Paint the Town Purple campaign runs through the 24th.
Order your purple ribbon now and display it in support of your fight against cancer, in memory or honor of a cancer patient or in support of the Relay For Life effort.

The plot against Flott
Darren Flott, head of the respiratory department at Atmore Community Hospital, was the object of a plot last week – a plot carried out by his co-workers.
This is the scenario: There was a Relay For Life fund-raiser involving a pig. The names of 20 people were put on a list. Votes were cast by donating money in a person’s name. The one who got the most money donated had to kiss the pig.
Dr. Larry Arcement, radiologist, took an early lead. Flott felt relatively certain that he would not be the one to kiss the pig … and he said so. But his co-workers had other ideas. Some of them – not even members of the Relay team – lobbied for donations in Flott’s name.
The last day to donate was Wednesday, March 24, 5 p.m. But, before donation time ended, there …

Poarch Band of Creek Indians become title sponsor
Relay For Life committee chair Julie Ray announced at last week’s team captain meeting that the Poarch Band of Creek Indians will be the title sponsor for this year’s Relay For Life event. As title sponsor, PCI will be recognized on all printed material and on the Relay t-shirt. A PCI representative will speak at opening ceremonies and help promote the mission of the American Cancer Society. PCI’s sponsorship also helps the local Relay effort meet the fundraising goal. Thanks for successful Relay event
By Rene’ Godwin
FNB&T Vice President
Wow … what an event! Again, the Atmore community came through with shining colors!
First of all, a huge THANK YOU to this year’s celebrity waiters. Each and every one of them did a great job and elevated table decorating to an entirely different level. The judges had a very difficult time determining a winner. So much so that for the first time we had a tie this year. Congratulations to Kelly Daniels and Judd Coley for Best Decorated Tables! What a display of creativity and elegance. Both Judd and Kelly donated their $50 winning prize to the event. Thanks to you both!
The $100 Most Tips award goes to Lisa Swift. Lisa’s tip total was over $1,200, plus Lisa donated the $100 prize money to the event. Thank you, Lisa, for your generosity and participation.
Again, Myrna Monroe’s pies were a huge hit. We’re talking homemade, …
