by Sherry Digmon

Zickeyous Byrd was named principal of Escambia County High School at the Escambia County Board of Education meeting Thursday, June 24. In making the recommendation, Superintendent Billy Hines said Byrd is a man known for turning schools around.

In 2005, the board hired Byrd as principal of Escambia County Middle School, a school in deep academic trouble. In five years, Byrd has indeed turned the school around, even implementing Escambia County Middle Preparatory School.

Tuesday Hines and Byrd were discussing ECHS and going over paperwork during the transition period at ECMS. Byrd said he is sad to leave the middle school but is looking forward to new challenges at the high school.

“The first I’ll do is look at the school’s strengths and weaknesses,” Byrd said. “I’m thrilled with the changes that have already been made and I …

White building softball program at ECMS

by Ryan Carter
March 24th, 2010

The Escambia County Middle School girl’s softball team is in full swing. Head Coach Alice White says she knows her team’s strengths and weaknesses. She described the team and young and inexperienced, especially in the pitcher and catcher positions.

She said her team strength is the number of players she has available for almost every position on the field.

“We have four players who can pitch for us,” she said.

She also has two players ready for action at first, second, and third base and at the short stop position.

“There are a lot of seventh graders on our team this year,” she said. “It’s good they’re getting this experience. I work with the softball coach at the high school [William Casaday] and she hopes many of her players will see playing time on the ECHS JV team.

“Tristan Boothe [an eighth grader] plays short stop on the ECHS varsity team,” she said.

ECHS to look for new principal, no football coach named

by Ryan Carter
March 18th, 2010

In addition to looking for a new football coach, Escambia County school officials will be looking for a new principal at Escambia County High School for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Escambia County School Board met in regular session Thursday afternoon, and one of the items on the agenda was to consider entering into negotiations with ECHS Principal Harvey Means for renewal of his contract for 3 years. When the item came up for consideration,  board member Cereal Daniel asked that Means’ contract and employment with the county be held out for discussion in executive session.

Board members were in executive session for about an hour and after calling the open board meeting back to order, the board chairman asked for a motion regarding Means’ contract negotiation, but all school board members remained silent. No one offered a motion to approve entering into negotiations with Principal Means, and the item died.  School …

Top spellers

by Sherry Digmon
February 17th, 2010

The competition was fierce last Wednesday, February 10, in the county-wide spelling bee held at Flomaton High School. The spellers were Daisy Carty, Brewton Elementary; Tommy Salter, Neal Elemetary; and defending champion Rodrick Felder, Escambia County Middle School. Each had won his/her school spelling bee to advance to the county level.

The three handled some really tough words, but in the end, Rodrick was the county champ. He has won the county spelling bee all of his four years at ECMS.

On March 6, Rodrick will have the opportunity to compete in the state spelling bee.

Shown at top with Rodrick is ECMS assistant principal Stan Quimby.

by Ryan Carter
January 15th, 2010

On Monday, January 11, 2010, Escambia County Middle School presented a check in the amount of $388.84 to a local family who lost everything in our recent flooding. School Principal Zickeyous Byrd said the family has two students who attend ECMS, and as a school, the administration, teachers and students felt it necessary to help them out in their time of need.

“Although this amount will not replace much, we hope it will help with the transitional things that must take place in scrabbling to find the basic essentials,” Byrd said.

The school plans to have additional fundraisers to help families in need.
