VSO remains open in Atmore
The Veterans Service Office in Escambia County will remain in Atmore.
The back-and-forth and uncertainty of the last several months ended last week when Escambia County Commission Chairman David Stokes received a letter from Commissioner Clyde Marsh, State of Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA).
The letter left no doubt that the Brewton office is closing and Atmore’s office will serve the veterans in this area.
Earlier this year, the county commission was made aware of plans by the ADVA to consolidate the two offices (Brewton and Atmore) in the county. It appeared the plan was to close the Atmore office.
At the April 8 county commission workshop, some commissioners said they thought the Brewton office would remain open and the Atmore office would close.
However, Commissioner Brandon Smith said he was under the impression that the commission would be allowed to decide which office remained open. Smith made a case for the Atmore office …

Commission continues fight for two VSO in county
Escambia County commissioners are continuing their effort to keep both veterans service offices open in the county.
Following a lengthy discussion at last Friday’s commission workshop, Commissioner Larry White suggested asking for a delay in closing the Brewton office (as recently recommended by the state) and requesting an opportunity to address the State Board of Veterans Affairs on July 2.
At Monday’s regular meeting, the commission adopted the following resolution:
WHEREAS, the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs has indicated an intention to consolidate the Brewton Veterans Affairs Office into the Atmore Veterans Affairs Office effective June 24, 2010; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs has not demonstrated any cost savings to the Department as a result of this consolidation; and
WHEREAS, the Members of the Escambia County Commission strongly object to this reduction in services to the veterans of Escambia County; and
WHEREAS, such a move would cause considerable hardship on the aging veterans …

ADVA requests keeping Atmore VSO open
Unless the Escambia County Commission acts against the recommendation of the State of Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA), the Atmore Veterans Service Office will remain open to serve Escambia County.
A letter from ADVA Commissioner Clyde Marsh dated April 28, 2010, contains the following: “The ADVA would prefer that the centralized office be maintained in Atmore if suitable office space could be found that would accommodate two employees and their necessary furniture and equipment. Although the Brewton office is slightly larger, it is an older facility and is not properly configured for handicapped access.”
Earlier this year, the ADVA made the decision to consolidate the two offices in Escambia County (Brewton and Atmore) into one office. Closing one office has been the subject of much discussion at the commission table at workshops on April 8 and 22. At the April 8, some commissioners were under the impression that the Brewton office …

Saying bye, sharing memories
He seemed the least like a Bubba than anyone I’ve ever known.
Distinguished. Hair styled, not just cut. Well dressed.
George “Bubba” Cook was nicknamed by his sisters when he was just a tyke. It stuck.
Bubba died suddenly at his home in Pensacola Saturday. He was 55. Sandy Everette at Johnson-Quimby said his wife found him on the floor. He was already gone.
Sandy was not divulging a confidence at the funeral home. She was talking about her friend and co-worker. Bubba was the funeral director at Johnson-Quimby. Sandy said they had become like brother and sister.
Any funeral director worth his salt does exactly what Bubba did in his job. He was compassionate and caring. He paid attention to details. He was professional.
Recently, when we were working on a Reflections section of Atmore News, I interviewed Bubba about funeral services. Who could ever have imagined that a few short weeks later, it would …

Fighting for the VA office in Atmore
Wednesday afternoon, April 14, Escambia County commissioners Brandon Smith and Larry White are to meet with Clyde Marsh, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) in Montgomery.
Smith and White are meeting with Marsh in an effort to keep both veterans service offices open in Escambia County. Currently, Mike Hanks, veteran service officer, works in Atmore two days a week, in Monroeville two days a week, and in Brewton one day a week. Rita Gatwood, assistant to the veteran service officer is in Brewton five days a week.
Earlier this year, the commission learned that the ADVA intended to consolidate the Atmore and Brewton offices as a cost saving measure. A letter to Marsh dated March 8, 2010, from County Administrator Tony Sanks contained the following: “ … since the County provides office space and all utilities, the savings would seem to be minimal. Additionally, reducing the …

White seeking re-election to commission
Larry W. White is announcing his candidacy for County Commission District 3. The following was provided by White:
It has been my honor and privilege to serve as County Commissioner from District 3 for the past 15 and one-half years. Through innovative planning, sound business management, and focused initiative we have Escambia County moving forward.
We have made major progress in infrastructure improvements. Many of our structurally deficient bridges have been replaced with modern structures and most of our major arteries (FAS Projects) have been resurfaced. We have been able to resurface many of our other farm-to-market roads and rural community streets.
Major improvements have been completed to the County Courthouse, County Detention Center and the County Work-release Center. Our budgets are balanced and our county has continued to reduce its long term debt since 1994.
Team efforts have led to the removal …

Commission Waiting On FEMA
By SHERRY DIGMON
News Staff Writer
Seems lots of folks have ideas about what the Escambia County Commission should do to fix the damaged bridges around the county. Several bridges, including three in the Canoe area, were washed away in floods in mid-December.
FEMA representative Tony Williams addressed the commission at Monday’s meeting to give them a single word of instruction – wait.
Some residents have suggested that the commission borrow the money to fix the bridges, then get the money back from FEMA. But, according to Williams, it doesn’t work that way.
Commissioner Brandon Smith said the message was clear. If the commission borrows the money, the commission will be left with the debt with no help from FEMA.
“FEMA’s attitude is that if you have the means to go to the bank and borrow the money, you don’t need them,” Smith said. “If we borrow the money, FEMA won’t pay it back and it …

Stokes reappointed commission chair
David Stokes was reappointed chairman of the Escambia County Commission in Monday’s meeting. Larry White was also reappointed as vice chairman. This will be Stokes’ fourth year as chairman. The two positions have one year terms.
In other business, the commission approved the disposition of two parcels received from the drug task force. The owner of the property, Michael Haveard was arrested and convicted of operating a “bad check” scheme.
The parcels include a home located at 306 Stallworth Drive in the Alco Community. Sealed bids will be taken and proceeds from the sale of the home will be placed in a fund which supports the Escambia County Drug Task Force.
The other property is located in East Brewton near the river and floods often. County administrator Tony Sanks said because the property floods, it will be given to the City of East Brewton. Haveard operated a business on the property. Sanks indicated …
