Chamber honors retiree members

The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a reception Thursday, Aug. 12, to honor the Chamber’s retiree members. The reception was held at the Atmore Public Library.

Chamber Executive Director Sheryl Vickery and Chamber President Lisa Reynolds addressed the retirees to thank them for their support of the Chamber and the community.

Representative Alan Baker also attended the reception.

“I am in awe to be in the midst of such great experience in this room,” he said. “Thank you for doing all you do now and for what you will do in the future. Thank you for letting me draw on your experience.”

Chamber hosts tourism session

The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a “Lunch N’ Learn” panel discussion Thursday, August 5, in the Atmore Community Hospital’s Mayson Auditorium. The event gave Atmore residents a chance to dine together while listening to presentations from tourism experts from several different organizations. The program’s goal was to demonstrate to those in attendance several ways in which the Atmore area can be enhanced by a vibrant tourism market based on the utilization of many of the communities’ pre-existing amenities.

Tom Chestnutt, Tourism Specialist from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University, presented ideas for using Agritourism as an avenue for upping interest in the Atmore area. Chestnutt said Agritourism, which is a facet of tourism that focuses on farms and rural areas, could be a great benefit to Atmore.

“Agritourism is a great way to attain sustainable tourism,” Chestnutt said. …

Leadership Atmore 2011 looking for recruits

The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Atmore program is looking for recruits for the Class of 2011. These recruits could be someone in your organization or even yourself.

What is Leadership Atmore? It is a program designed to identify and develop the leadership potential in this community. It was founded in 1993 and modeled after other leadership programs in the state. The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce coordinates the program. As a 501-C3 non-profit organization, Leadership Atmore is self-sustained through tuition and scholarships.

This program brings together a group of individuals who reflect the diversity of this community.

Leadership Atmore is a nine-month program consisting of an opening overnight retreat, seven full day sessions and graduation. Through these interactive sessions, each individual is given the opportunity to become more aware of the community in which they work or live.

The overnight retreat is held in September followed by the Leadership Skills Session in …

Chamber Ambassadors attend orientation

The new class of Chamber Ambassadors and their parents attended orientation Thursday, June 17. This is the first time orientation has been held for Ambassadors.

Shelly Williams, Chamber office manager and director of the Ambassador program, gave an overview of the program, including what is expected of the Ambassadors.

“You are our young faces in the community,” Shelly said. She talked to them about their conduct at school, church, in the community, with friends and with enemies. “People are looking at you,” she said.

Also attending were Lisa Reynolds, Chamber president; Sheryl Vickery, Chamber executive director; and Peggie Byrd, Chamber board member and program adviser.

Third walking tour planned for Saturday

The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce held its second walk through the streets of Atmore Saturday morning. Four walks are planned this month as part of the statewide Down Town, Small Town celebration. Saturday’s walk tour included a history lesson provided by Nancy Karrick on most of the older buildings on North and South Main Street.
The walk started up the south bound side of South Main Street. The group participating in the walk stopped at Escambia Drug. Escambia Drug is the oldest Atmore business still doing business by the same name.

After crossing the railroad tracks, the group visited Earle’s Jewelry where Frances Earle Dunn presented some history of the building.

According to Mrs. Dunn, the building was owned by J.F. Peavey and his wife, Alice, in the 1900s. After several owners including Mr. and Mrs. J.E. McCoy, Mr. A.P. Webb, and Mr. J.S. Havard and his wife, Elizabeth, the property was …

The first Atmore Walking Tour is Saturday

Don’t forget the first Atmore Walking Tour tomorrow (Saturday) beginning at 10 a.m., at Heritage Park. This is the first of four tours.

The June 5th tour will feature five churches – St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic, First Baptist, Trinity Episcopal, First Methodist, and First Presbyterian. David Langford will be the guide to escort everyone through the tour. At each church a host member will give you a tour of their church.

If walking is difficult for you, please feel free to drive and catch up with the tour at each of the churches.

The June 12th tour will be a downtown tour. Your guide will walk you through downtown and will give you information on the buildings.

By the way, the American Red Cross will have a quilt show, Quilts in Heritage Park, June 12th, the same day as the second walking tour. This is a fundraiser for the Red Cross.

Session to focus on employee files

Atmore Area Chamber Of Commerce is hosting Lunch N’ Learn Thursday, May 27, noon to 1 p.m., at the Escambia County Industrial Development Authority Office 406 South Trammell Street, Atmore.

The topic is “Employee Files: What Should And Should Not Be In There.” Guest instructor is LaKesha Womack, business consultant with the Women’s Business Center, Inc.

Do you know which documents are required for your employee files? How long do you need to keep those documents and files? You’ll find answers at this session.

Walk around Atmore, learn some history

Atmore is one of 30 towns across Alabama on display during Saturday mornings in June as part of the Alabama Tourism Department’s June Walking Tours, part of state tourism’s Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns state-wide promotion.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sheryl Vickery has put together four walking tours for Atmore. Each tour begins at 10 a.m., Saturdays in June at Heritage Park, corner of Main and Craig.

Tours are as follows:

June 5 – Church Tour

June 12 – Downtown Building Tour

June 19 – Home Tour

June 26 – Heritage Park, YMCA, Boy Scout Hut

Participating towns are Ashland, Ashville, Athens, Atmore, Birmingham, Courtland, Decatur, Demopolis, Enterprise, Eufaula, Fairhope, Florence, Gadsden, Gordo,  Guntersville, Hartselle, Hayneville, Homewood, Huntsville, Madison, Monroeville, Montevallo, Montgomery, Oak Hill, Prattville, Selma, Scottsboro, Sheffield, Silas, Sylacauga, Thomasville, Tuscumbia, Tuskegee, Wetumpka.
