by Ryan Carter
June 16th, 2010

By JOAN HACKMAN
American Red Cross Director
Atmore, Alabama CSDU

When we asked for our friends and neighbors to loan us their quilts for display, our goal was to be able to display about 30 quilts. The result was the Atmore community shared quilted work from their personal history and travel … a pillow top quilted in Hawaii, a quilt from Noti, Oregon, family pieces from California, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, all bringing different styles and “ways” of quilting. Retha is a 1962 graduate of Escambia County High School, and she’s the daughter of Eugenia Edwards and H.H. Lawley.

After the storm in 1969, Retha and Ben traveled to Sumrall to help family members clean up. While sifting through the wreckage of the family barn, they discovered a trunk. After opening the trunk, they found old linens and newspapers and wrapped in unbleached muslin were blocks of an unfinished quilt.

“We were thrilled they [the blocks] were in good shape,” Retha said.
Ben’s grandmother told them she and her mother started the quilt in the late 20s or early 30s.

“She said they worked on it, finished …
