Council upgrading airport
At the regular meeting Monday, the Atmore City Council approved a resolution to apply for a $1,035,468 grant from the Federal Aviation Association. The grant for improving the Atmore Municipal Airport, will be used upgrading or replacing roads, lights and beacons at the site.
The City of Atmore will also submit an application for funding assistance from the Alabama Department of Transportation in the amount of $ 25,886.50 to aid with the improvements. Per the agreement with ADOT, the City of Atmore has also approved a resolution to match the figure given by the State of Alabama for funding aid for the project.
Improvements for the airport will include the construction of an airport access road that will run between Highway 31 and the new terminal area and Beacon Lane. Improvement to the facility’s existing drainage system will also be made. In addition to the improvements, the project will also provide the environmental mitigation of pre-existing streambeds for the access road that will include three roadways over the streambeds.
Replacements for the airport covered under the new project will include a new wind sock and beacon. The airport’s MIRL system will also be upgraded with new light fixtures, an electrical vault, regulator and cable. According to the project descriptions, “the current system has become unreliable, maintenance cost has increased, and parts are difficult to find. The proposed replacement will restore the MIRL to current FAA standards.”
