EA wins honors at UCA camp

The Escambia Academy varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squad spent the week of July 12th through the 15th on the Huntingdon College campus for the UCA team camp. Both squads choreographed their own routines and did not hire a choreographer like most squads.

The varsity squad  won the following awards: Champions for Home Pom, Champions for Cheer, Runner-Up for Extreme Routine, AISA (Alabama Independent School Association) State Champions for small squad varsity, and the Leadership Award.

The following information is taken from the UCA Web site about the Leadership Award:

“The Leadership Award is given to the squad who shows good leadership skills, school spirit, is friendly to the other teams, and has a great attitude. When the squads are voting the instructors will tell the campers to think of a squad at camp that you would want to be on. The award is also explained as a coach’s ideal team. They not only do what they are asked, they go above and beyond what is asked of them. What makes this award unique is that the award isn’t chosen by the staff, it is chosen by the other squads who attended the camp. The Leadership Award is something that is seen as a huge honor to the UCA staff. It is seen that way because the teams who get this award are the ones who are doing what all cheerleaders should be doing: showing school spirit while being friendly to others. So the next time you are at camp you should set one of your goals to win the Leadership award!”

Individuals also placed at the camp:

* UCA All-American cheerleaders on the varsity squad are Nycole Thompson and Niki Bryan. These girls have the opportunity to travel to London to dance in the New Year’s Day Parade.

* AISA All-Star cheerleader on the varsity squad is Bailey Vaughn. Bailey will cheer at the AISA football and basketball All-Star games.

* Rachel Fuller, captain, and Bailey Vaughn, co-captain, were invited to dance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

The junior varsity squad won the following awards: Runner-Up for Home Pom, Runner-Up for Extreme Routine, Runner-Up for AISA State, Champions for small squad junior varsity.

Individuals also placed on their squad. UCA All-American Cheerleaders from the junior varsity squad are Natalie Lassiter and Anna Catherine Sasser. These girls have the opportunity to march in the Thanksgiving Day Parade at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

A new program introduced by UCA this summer is “Pin it Forward: America Needs Cheerleaders.” This program identifies cheerleaders who “demonstrate one or more of the reasons why American Needs Cheerleaders, including, but not limited to: leadership, spirit, commitment to excellence, kindness and motivation.

UCA came up with this program as a way to promote all of the values encouraged through cheerleading. Bill Seely, Vice President of UCA says, ‘We started the Pin it Forward program to highlight and reward the incredible qualities that are found in cheerleaders. One of the things we hope to do at camp is inspire leadership on and off the field. All of these athletes will be entering college and the workforce someday and it’s those qualities that will best serve them and their community long after their cheerleading careers are over.’” [Quote from the UCA Web site]

Escambia Academy had three girls recognized for their leadership through the Pin it Forward program; they were Amber Huskey, Page Lancaster, and Anna Catherine Sasser.

Those girls invited to the various parades will be seeking corporate sponsors to aid in funding their respective trips. If  interested in donating, please contact EA at 368-2080.
