Atmore Y changing things up

The Atmore chapter of the YMCA is going through some changes, both locally and nationally, as the summer months begin to wane. One of the organization’s most visible changes is a new logo, recently adopted by the association, changing the look of the YMCA nationwide. T-shirts bearing the new logo are for sale at the local YMCA office and may be purchased for $10 for sizes small through extra-large and $12 for sizes double x and larger.

On the local level, the Atmore chapter of the YMCA is also getting ready for a number of other changes. Allen Walston, chairman of the YMCA board, said a recommendation from YUSA may bring a partnership with another local YMCA. Walston said the possibility of Atmore’s YMCA pairing with another local chapter comes on the heels of a visit from a YUSA assessment team. With tough budgeting details to work around and management changes occurring, Walston said the team thought a partnership may help with “guidance and cooperation” within the association.

Not everything at the Atmore YMCA will change, however. At the board’s last meeting, on July 14, a unanimous decision will keep program director Ross Terry heading up the Atmore chapter as Facility Manager.

“We’re just really excited about that,” Walston said. “Ross has been here for a number of years and is doing a great job.”

The YMCA, under Terry’s direction, is currently working to get their after school programs under way. On August 9, the YMCA will begin its 2010 soccer program. Registration began Monday for those interested in participating and will continue until August 12. A $10 registration fee will apply to members and program fees will be $30 per week for members, $25 per week for a second child and $40 per week for non-members.

Terry said a lot will be going on as the YMCA gears up for the soccer program. A skills clinic will be held on August 12, at 5:30 p.m. for ages 3-18. Games for registered players will begin on September 7, and run until October 8, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays with tentative start times of 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.

A team comprised of players, ages 13-18, is also being formed which will travel, playing games on Saturdays and some Tuesdays in Brewton, with the possibility of games to be announced in Bay Minette.
