The 2010 Native American Youth Association softball and baseball tournament was held in Poarch Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17. The Poarch Creek Indians hosted the event and the tournament’s first game marked the beginning of the weekend’s contests, as well as the first game to ever be played at the newly finished Arrowhead Park.

This year’s tournament included tribes from all over the country including the Seneca Tribe of New York, the Choctaw Tribe of Mississippi, the Cherokee Tribe of North Carolina and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Competing teams included girls softball and boys baseball for ages 9-12, 13-15 and 16-18.

Various Poarch teams showed up for the tournament in a big way with several teams defending titles from last year’s events in New York and other teams looking for new titles of their own.

Friday’s action included the Poarch Indians from the 13-15 year old boy’s division, whose age group won first place in last year’s event, topping the Sooners. The Poarch Warriors bested Brighton and a Creek Indian showdown ensued as two of the host teams fought it out to move on in the double elimination tournament. The Poarch Indians prevailed and, after yet another win over the Sooners would go on to win the age bracket’s second first place prize in as many years.

The Poarch Warriors would end the tournament with that age group’s third place prize while the Poarch Tomahawks took first place in the boy’s 16-18 year old division with wins over GWY and the Seminoles.

The Poarch girls 16-18-year-old team endured a tough loss Friday morning to the Blitz, but were able to battle back with wins over the Seminoles and the Blitz before coming in second overall with a loss Saturday to GWY.

The Poarch girls from the 13-15 year old bracket also placed in this year’s tournament. After defeating Seneca in round one the girls team went on to go one for three in play with GWY coming in second overall.
