Huxford resident Nikki McMullen received great news recently. She won a trip for two to California for the America Idols finals next week – and she will participate in the AT&T American Idol Sweepstakes with a chance to win up to a million dollars. The least she can win is $10,000.

McMullen, who is 27, will take her five-year-old daughter, Madison, with her. They fly out of Mobile Monday on American Eagle. As part of her prize package, McMullen and her daughter will stay at the J. W. Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles.

McMullen said she was watching American Idol and anyone was invited to send a text message for a chance to win up to $1 million. McMullen sent the message but didn’t think anymore about it. Last week, she received a phone call saying she had won the contest.

When she and Madison arrive in Los Angeles next week, they will be taken by limo to the Marriott, near the location where American Idol is filmed.

Next week, she will have the opportunity to win the grand prize by picking one of 12 phones. Each phone will have a text message. One phone’s message will be $1 million; one $100,000; two $50,000; two $25,000; and six $10,000.

Madison said if there’s a purple phone, they have to pick that one because it’s her favorite color.

If it sounds too good to be true … well, maybe it isn’t. McMullen said she’s had her doubts but there has been so much notarized paperwork, affidavits, phone calls, and information exchanged, she doesn’t see how this can be anything but legitimate.

Of course, McMullen would love to pick the phone with the million dollar text message, but she said she certainly would not be disappointed with $10,000.

In a telephone interview Tuesday morning, McMullen said she has been attending Jeff Davis Community College on Tuesday nights so she hasn’t seen a lot of American Idol this year. However, she’s seen enough on Wednesday nights to have her favorites. McMullen is hoping  to see Crystal Bowersox and Casey James in the finals next Tuesday night. She’d like to see Ms Bowersox announced as the Season Nine winner the following night.

By Thursday, May 27, the excitement and trip of a lifetime will all be over. Madison and her mom will fly back to Alabama in time to see McMullen’s sister, Kayla Gunn, graduate from J.U. Blacksher High School that night.

McMullen, who graduated from Escambia County High School in 2001, is married to Currie McMullen.
