Relay parade planned for April 24
The Atmore Relay For Life event is just over a month away. It will be held April 24 at Tom Byrne Park. However, there are plenty of events and plans going on this week and the coming week giving area residents the opportunity to help the fight against cancer. This Friday the Relay team at Atmore Community Hospital is selling spaghetti lunches. The lunches are $6. You can reserve lunch by calling Kimber Smith in radiology at 368-2500 or by calling Pat Hall at 368-5655. Delivery is available.
The theme for the event is “Cancer Is No Parade,” and the Relay teams are planning a parade through the streets of Atmore on Saturday, April 24. Line-up for the parade starts at 10:45 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The parade starts at noon.
The parade route will travel from the church to Horner Street, turn left on South Main, travel to Lindberg Avenue and turn left and end at Tom Byrne Park. The floats entered by Relay For Life teams will serve as their campsites for the event.
Any interested in being a part of the parade should contact Gayle Johnson at 368-9136, ext. 2210.
Participants in the parade should follow the following guidelines:
No cars or trucks will be allowed (other than antique cars) with the exception of those pulling floats and carrying dignitaries;
No horses, dogs or other animals or livestock;
Trailers should not exceed 26 feet in length;
All trailers carrying children must have fenders over all tires;
Drivers must be 21 or older. All cars and trucks in the parade must have proof of insurance. Please provide license and proof of insurance prior to the beginning of the parade;
Each float must have 2 walking monitors and one observer in the cab other than the driver;
Floats are responsible for all expenses and providing their own throws.
Starting April 1, everyone will have the opportunity to show their support for the Relay For Life effort. The Paint the Town Purple campaign begins April 1 and runs through the 24th.
Order your purple ribbon now and display it in support of your fight against cancer, in memory or honor of a cancer patient or in support of the Relay For Life effort. “We’ve made 180 bows,” Pat Hall said. “Marilyn Bryant made the bows for us, and they’re beautiful.”
Hall said Bryant has arthritis but wanted to make the bows.
“It’s a labor of love for Marilyn,” Hall said. “Her daddy died from cancer.”
The bows are $10 each and go on sale April 1. Call 368-5655 to order your bow.
