Cougars open baseball season with a double header

The Escambia Academy Cougars opened their baseball season with a double header against Southern on Tuesday. Coach Dauget told his players before the game began,” This is where it begins, let’s play some baseball.”

The first game began at 1 p.m. during school, which gave most of the school the opportunity to watch the Cougar’s first game.

Junior Keaton Maher took the mound for EA. Maher struck out three of the first nine batters in the Southern rotation. In the 3rd inning, Southern managed to produce the first points of the game, making the score 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.

Jarret Hadley began the show for the Cougars by reaching on a double to start the bottom of the 3rd. Brandon “Pistol Pete” Goins followed Hadley with a single of his own, and Keaton Maher produced a single bringing Hadley in for the score. Later in the inning, Ryan Linam was intentionally walked. Hunter Bates and James Dean added two RBI of their own making the score 3-1. Southern failed to score the 4th inning.

EA’s Jon Dean recorded a single along with stealing two bases. Jarrett Hadley added a RBI himself scoring Jon Dean giving EA a 4-1 lead.

After both schools went scoreless in the 5th, EA started the bottom of the 6th with Clayton Dyess singling. After Dyess stole a base, Goins was walked. Maher stepped up to bat, when Dyess stole home making the score 5-1. Maher and Goins were eventually brought home by Ryan Linam giving EA a 7-1 win.

The win gave the Cougars a 1-0 record in area play. Keaton Maher pitched the entire game, throwing 58 strikes (including fouls) out of 88 pitches.

The second game was filled with offense from both teams. Southern managed to score 3 runs in the 1st inning. The Cougars generated 3 runs of their own from Dean, Hadley, and Goins. Dean doubled and stole his way home. Hadley singled and also stole his way home. Goins was walked and was brought home by Hunter Bates.

Going into the 2nd inning, the score stood tied at 3-3. Southern managed to add another run, but the Cougars answered with runs from Chason Roley, Dean, and Hadley, making the score 6-4. After Southern tied the score, Linam scored for EA giving them the lead, at least for a short while.

In the 5th, Southern scored 3 runs recapturing the lead at 9-7. EA failed to score in the inning. The 6th inning was a dud for Southern, but EA came back with the comeback, adding 5 runs from James Dean, Roley, Jon Dean, Hadley, and Goins. EA

EA’s defense stepped up in the 7th and handed Southern it’s second defeat of the day giving the Cougars a 12-9 win.

EA used Brandon Goins and James Dean as pitchers for the second game. The two pitchers combined for 47 strikes out of 138 pitches.

EA opens area play 2-0 record in area play.
