The first Atmore Walking Tour is Saturday
Don’t forget the first Atmore Walking Tour tomorrow (Saturday) beginning at 10 a.m., at Heritage Park. This is the first of four tours.
The June 5th tour will feature five churches – St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic, First Baptist, Trinity Episcopal, First Methodist, and First Presbyterian. David Langford will be the guide to escort everyone through the tour. At each church a host member will give you a tour of their church.
If walking is difficult for you, please feel free to drive and catch up with the tour at each of the churches.
The June 12th tour will be a downtown tour. Your guide will walk you through downtown and will give you information on the buildings.
By the way, the American Red Cross will have a quilt show, Quilts in Heritage Park, June 12th, the same day as the second walking tour. This is a fundraiser for the Red Cross.

Dean named principal of ECHS
The Escambia County Board of Education named Joseph L. Dean principal of Escambia County High School Thursday afternoon. Dean replaces Harvey Means who worked two years at the school before the school board decided not to negotiate a contract with Means.
Dean is a native of Monroe County and has spent much of the last 15 years working in Butler County schools. He taught physical education and math for 9 years, served as an assistant principal at Greenville High School where he was noted for his discipline, and served three years as principal at Georgiana High School.
After the superintendent of schools resigned in Butler County, the school board asked Dean to serve as interim superintendent. He did so for 9 months.

Shooter captured in Perdido
Marcus Darnell Butler was arrested by the US Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Task Force and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday in Perdido.
According to Sgt. Anthony Lowery with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, investigators acted off confidential information to negotiate Butler’s surrender without incident. Butler is currently in the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Corrections Center on multiple assault 2nd charges.
Butler was wanted in connection with a shooting in Tensaw earlier this month – a shooting that left seven people wounded. Authorities said the shooting may have been sparked by a feud over a woman.
The ages of those involved ranged from 20s to 30s, Lowery said.

Session to focus on employee files
Atmore Area Chamber Of Commerce is hosting Lunch N’ Learn Thursday, May 27, noon to 1 p.m., at the Escambia County Industrial Development Authority Office 406 South Trammell Street, Atmore.
The topic is “Employee Files: What Should And Should Not Be In There.” Guest instructor is LaKesha Womack, business consultant with the Women’s Business Center, Inc.

Family heirloom
As for many families, the quilt made by her grandmother, Lottie Jordan, is a heirloom that Mrs. Orie Kyles treasures.
The quilt was made over 40 years ago. When the quilt was made, they used newspaper to cut the pattern pieces.
This quilt along with many other will be displayed at the American Red Cross Quilt Show on June 12 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Heritage Park.

ABI investigating fatal shooting in Greenville
At the request of the Greenville Police Department, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the fatal shooting of an armed subject who confronted police as they responded to a domestic disturbance report at a local residence. Inside the residence officers located the subject’s wife with serious gunshot wounds, and later discovered the body of his sister-in-law, fatally shot in her nearby home.
After receiving the domestic disturbance report, Greenville Police officers arrived at the Winkler Street residence shortly after 11:20 p.m., Tuesday and were confronted by a subject armed with a pistol. Officers fired and the subject, Jim Heard, 60, of Greenville, was fatally wounded. Officers found Heard’s wife, Mildred G. Heard, 61, inside the residence, seriously wounded from a gunshot. Two minor children, also at the residence, were unharmed.

APL launches summer reading program
Make a Splash –READ! is the theme of this year’s Atmore Public Library summer reading program. Children ages four to 12 are invited to explore the world of water and reading fun through stories, songs, games, and other activities about oceans, rivers, lakes, and pools and the creatures who live there.
The programs will be held on June 4, 11, 18, 25, and July 1 and 9. The program on June 11 will be divided into three time slots at 9, 10, and 11. All other programs will begin at 10. Please call or come by to get your ticket to the June 11 program.
The library invites families to join the Read-to-Me portion of the program by encouraging their children to read.

Saucer named RPES Teacher of the Year
Cindy Saucer has been named Teacher of the Year at Rachel Patterson Elementary School.
Ms. Saucer has her master’s degree in early childhood education and has been teaching for 32 years with experience in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.
“Teaching is very important to me,” Ms. Saucer said. “It brings joy to my heart to see my students progress. I would not trade this profession for any other. My desire is to touch the lives of my students daily and in some small way make a difference in their lives.”
RP Principal Susan McKenzie said Ms. Saucer is an extraordinary teacher and person.
Ms. Saucer is married to Mike Saucer and is the mother of two children.

A gift to St. Jude Children’s Hospital
The preschoolers at First Baptist Church put their tricycles to good use recently raising $2,500 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The preschoolers rode in a Trike-A-Thon during Bicycle Safety for Kids Week which was March 22-26. Bike-well Bear visited the kids during the safety week.
