Mayfest is this Saturday in Tom Byrne Park.
Our parks play an important role in the quality of life in this community. Surrounded by azaleas, longleaf pine, and crepe myrtles, Tom Byrne Park is the perfect setting again for this year’s Mayfest.

Monday morning, April 19, about 6:30, I started my walk in the park. It was a beautiful day, perfect weather and perfect temperature for a walk. As I started my walk, I thought about all God had created and it was so beautiful – trees, flowers and even the birds were singing.
I walked about 100 feet and I noticed a cigarette pack, so, I picked it up. Another 200 feet, I saw a can, I also picked it up. Yet another 100 feet were the picnic tables and trash was overflowing out of the garbage cans; pizza boxes were on the ground and paper was everywhere. On one of the picnic tables were cups and chip bags. Trash was all over the fresh cut grass. …

Taking time
Time is a precious commodity which cannot be stored for later use. In reality, the present is the only time we can claim. Time passes moment by moment, yet it is in those moments that we live. Our use of moments accumulates into a lifetime which tells our individual stories. Regardless of our length of days, our lives are brief in the overall scheme of things. From James 4:14 (KJV) we read, “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” Robert H. Smith penned the poem “The Clock of Life” which speaks to the issue of time:
The clock of life is wound but one,
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour.

‘Prayer for such a time as this’
The National Day of Prayer will be observed in Atmore Thursday, May 6, with three events at Tom Byrne Park. The committee hopes that everyone will be able to attend one or all of these programs.
The walking trail will have names of national, state, and area elected officials written in chalk and will be open all day for anyone who wishes to come by any time of the day.
* Morning – 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. – Walk the track and pray with a pastor if you’d like. Pastor Hattie Bishop and the Rev. Ted Bridges will be available if anyone would like to pray with them. Committee member Sandra Johnson will also be on hand.
* Noon – Prayer Service – A program will be provided so those in attendance may join in a Prayer for Our Nation. In addition, designated prayers will include government, military, media, education, …

Trinity sets May schedule
On Sunday May 2nd, The Rev. Arnold Bush will officiate at the 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist Service, which will be followed by a pot luck lunch and the quarterly Women of Trinity White Elephant, Plant & Bake Sale in the parish hall.
On Mother’s Day Sunday, May 9, Morning Prayer will be conducted at 11 a.m.
The Reverend Albert Kennington will officiate on Sunday May 16 at the 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist service.
All are welcome.

Katie Coon and Adam Respress of Atmore are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Addison Elizabeth Respress. Addison was born March 9, 2010 at 6:23 p.m., at D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton, Ala. She weighed 7 pounds and 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Lee Smith of Centre, Ala. are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Lena Suzanne, to Robert William Hardy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fletcher Hardy of Atmore.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Johnny Warren Lancaster of Boaz, Alabama, the late Mr. Johnny Warren Lancaster, and the late Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Smith. Miss Smith is a graduate of Cherokee County High School and Auburn University. She is pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Alabama State University.
Mr. Hardy is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hardy of Atmore, Mrs. John Garrett Cheney of Molino, Florida, and the late Mr. John Garrett Cheney. Mr. Hardy is a graduate of Escambia Academy and Auburn University. He is employed as assistant manager of Elberta Farmers Cooperative in Elberta, Alabama.

Local students compete in Rocking Chair Contest
United Bank, area school students and PTA members are working together in the United Bank Rocking Chair Contest.
For the contest, United Bank provided rocking chairs, PTA members provided the paint and supplies and students designed and painted the chairs using the theme of saving money. Students in the special education program designed and painted the chair at A.C. Moore Elementary.
During the contest, students were required to paint the chairs, and chairs were to be decorated following the theme to save money.
The chairs were returned to the bank and are on display at local United Bank branches. Chairs will be judged and winning chairs will be selected Saturday, May 1 at Mayfest in Atmore.
A grand prize of $500 will be awarded and regional winners will receive $250.
