by Bonnie Bartel Latino
May 19th, 2010

Huxford resident Nikki McMullen received great news recently. She won a trip for two to California for the America Idols finals next week – and she will participate in the AT&T American Idol Sweepstakes with a chance to win up to a million dollars. The least she can win is $10,000.

McMullen, who is 27, will take her five-year-old daughter, Madison, with her. They fly out of Mobile Monday on American Eagle. As part of her prize package, McMullen and her daughter will stay at the J. W. Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles.

McMullen said she was watching American Idol and anyone was invited to send a text message for a chance to win up to $1 million. McMullen sent the message but didn’t think anymore about it. Last week, she received a phone call saying she had won the contest.

When she and Madison arrive in Los Angeles next week, they …

by Bonnie Bartel Latino
April 21st, 2010

Last week Atmore native, Ralph L. “Tray” Smith, III was selected as opinions editor of the Crimson White, The University of Alabama campus newspaper. Published four times per week and with a population of over 28,000 students, plus availability in the Tuscaloosa area and a large online readership of alumni, parents and friends, the CW’s circulation is larger than that of papers in many Alabama towns. Smith joined the staff in January when he began penning an opinion column for the paper. He begins his new position as CW opinions editor next week while still only a freshman. During a telephone interview last weekend, Smith said he will continue to serve as a (weekly) columnist but will now select 10 other student columnists to work on his staff.

Trinity Episcopal celebrates Holy Week

by Bonnie Bartel Latino
March 31st, 2010

As Trinity Church continues to celebrate Holy Week, their services are open to the community. Although Trinity currently has no full-time priest, the congregation remains strong and faithful, thanks in great deal to two well-known and much loved retired priests who are both still active in the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. The Reverend John Phillips and The Reverend Albert Kennington, who have been serving as supply priests at Trinity, will offer services this week.

John Phillips officiated at the church’s Palm Sunday service. Atmore native Albert Kennington will officiate at Trinity’s services on Maundy Thursday, April 1, and on Good Friday, April 2. Both of those services will begin at 5:30 p.m. John Phillips will return to Trinity on Easter Sunday to celebrate the Holy Eucharist at the 11 a.m. service.   Founded in 1900 as the Easter offering of W.M. Carney, historic Trinity Church is believed to be …

Trinity to Host Pancake Supper Feb 16

by Bonnie Bartel Latino
February 11th, 2010

Trinity Episcopal Church will celebrate Shrove Tuesday with their annual Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 16. Open to the public, the supper will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the parish hall adjacent to the church. Hot pancakes with syrup, sausage and juice will be served. The cost at the door will be $3 for adults and $1.50 for children 12 and under.

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period that Christians call Lent. The day represents both the final opportunity for celebration (Mardi Gras) and the last chance to repent before the hallowed and solemn days of Lent begin the following day, Ash Wednesday.

Trinity, which is currently without a full time priest, is happy to announce that Atmore native The Reverend Albert Kennington, who now lives in Fairhope, will officiate at its Ash Wednesday Holy Eucharist service to be held on February 17 at 5:30 p.m. Rev. Kennington …

Playing with the Enemy: A phenomenal read

by Bonnie Bartel Latino
February 10th, 2010

Congratulations to Cathy McKinley and the Atmore Public Library Board for selecting Playing with the Enemy as this community’s recommended read.

Playing with the Enemy is the best work of narrative non-fiction I have ever read. Numerous other cities and high schools have also selected Illinois author Gary Moore’s Playing with the Enemy as their book of choice. Atmore will now join readers in those towns and schools who will be among Americans who’ll already know this amazing story before the movie version is released.

Filming begins in May near Shreveport, La. The movie has attracted some of Hollywood’s biggest names to its cast and production crew. In a jaw-dropping truth-is-sometimes-stranger- than-fiction event, one of author’s own sons, actor Toby Moore, will play the leading role as Gene Moore, his own grandfather.

Were Playing with the Enemy fiction, it would be amazing; because the story is a factual account of the life of …

Physical Therapy Department wins contest with “Crimson Christmas”

by Bonnie Bartel Latino
January 12th, 2010

The Physical Therapy (PT) Department recently won first place in Atmore Community Hospital’s Christmas bulletin board contest with their “Crimson Christmas” entry.

Festooned in metallic crimson and white pom-pom strips, the winning display featured a Santa theme combined with the University of Alabama football team headed to California for the national championship game. Individual letters spelling “Crimson Christmas” were cut from black and white houndstooth print paper reminiscent of the trademark hat of legendary former Alabama coach the late Bear Bryant.

Alabama’s mascot, Big AL, pulled Santa’s ‘Bama red sleigh. The ferocious-looking gray elephant’s trunk curled triumphantly around a crimson Alabama pennant as his feet trampled the head of a Texas longhorn, the mascot of the University of Texas which Alabama will play on January 7 for the BCS Championship title. From the rear of Santa’s sleigh, icons of other …
