Nichols crowned 2010 Miss ECHS

The Escambia County High School Hodnette Auditorium was the setting for the 2010 Miss ECHS Pageant Saturday night.

The theme for the evening You Can’t Stop the Beat from the movie Hairspray set the stage for music and movie clips.

Morgan Nichols was crowned Miss ECHS Saturday night. First alternate was LaRose Powell, and second alternate was Dominique Knight.

The contestants were Taylor Rain “Rainy” January, Davisha Johnson, Leslie Smith, Meghan Moye, Makeria Williams, LaRose Powell, Takia Johnson, Chianti Lawson, Dominique Knight, and Morgan Nichols.

The 10 young ladies competed in talent, physical fitness, and poise and appearance.

Talent presentations were LaRose Powell – baton twirling routine; Rainy January – poem presentation I Will Rise by Maya Angelou; Morgan Nichols – vocal solo White Horse; Meghan Moye – an original monologue; Leslie Smith – exhibition solo rifle routine; Dominique Knight – vocal solo Listen; Davisha Johnson – vocal solo This Is Us; Chianti Lawson – dance; Makeria Williams – solo I’d Rather Go Blind; Takia Johnson – solo from Dreamgirls.

Following the three areas of competition, the top five contestants were announced: LaRose Powell, Dominique Knight, Morgan Nichols, Rainy January, and Meghan Moye.

These five then participated in the question and answer portion of the pageant.

During the evening, as the judges worked on their evaluations and scores, clips of the movie Hairspray were shown.

Finally, the announcement of awards and Miss ECHS.

LaRose Powell received the Poise and Appearance Award.

Morgan Nichols received the following awards: Spirit Award (contestant who sold the most tickets to the pageant), Talent Award, Fitness Award, Scholastic Award (contestant with the highest grade point average), Miss Congeniality (awarded by vote of her peers to the contestant who is most helpful, most positive, and most upbeat during pageant preparation).

Morgan Nichols, 17, is in the 11th grade. She is the daughter of Jay and Teresa Nichols.

LaRose Powell, 15, is in the 10th grade. She is the daughter of Rosemary Powell and the late Johnnie Wayne Powell.

Dominique Knight, 17, is in the 11th grade. She is the daughter of Thomas and Angelia Knight.

Taylor Rain January, 16, is in the10th grade. She is the daughter of Paulette January-German and William German.

Meghan Moye, 16, is in the 11th grade. She is the daughter of Craig and Becky Moye.

Davisha Johnson, 16, is in the 11th grade. She is the daughter of David Johnson and Nerissa Tucker.

Leslie Smith, 16, is in the 11th grade. She is the daughter of Michael and Lisa Smith.

Makeria Williams, 17, is in the 11th grade. She is the daughter of Theodis and Brenda Williams.

Takia Johnson, 16, is in the 10th grade. She is the daughter of Alfred and Murlie Johnson.

Chianti Lawson, 15, is in the 10th grade. She is the daughter of La’tanna Lawson and Anthony Williams.
